Staying safe, band by band
What to change at Caution, Danger, and Extreme.
Updated:
The band is the verdict. Here is what to change when it moves. Each band keeps the habits of the one before it.
Safe
- Go about your plans. Your body handles this heat well.
- Drink when you are thirsty.
- Glance at the band again before long hours outside.
Caution
- Carry water and drink before you feel thirsty.
- Ease the pace and rest in shade now and then.
- Put hard efforts in the morning or the evening.
Danger
- Keep outdoor stretches short, with shade breaks every 15 to 20 minutes.
- Drink small amounts often, not one big bottle at the end.
- Move workouts indoors or to another day.
- Check on anyone who cannot get out of the heat.
Extreme
- Move plans indoors. This is not weather to push through.
- If you must go out, keep it brief and stay in shade.
- Drink steadily and cool your skin with water.
- Watch each other for the signs of heat illness.
Limit
- Stay in cooled air. Shade alone is not enough in this heat.
- Keep time outside to minutes, and not alone.
- Drink steadily and wet your skin. Moving air helps the water work.
- Check on anyone without cooling. This heat is dangerous at rest.
